Let’s find out how and why Social Constructivism is relevant to the adult learner!

Learning Theory is an attempt to describe how people learn. Connectivism is when individuals recognize and connect; this is evident in the 21st century!

Comparing Lev Vygotsky’s Social Constructivism Theory to the traditional learning theory such as behaviorism, constructivism, and cognitivism differs in many ways. Today, in the “DIGITAL AGE”, learning is defined as a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources. Specifically, learning occurs in a distributed way; within a social network which is technologically enhanced, recognizing and interpreting patterns. Diversity is an influencing factor within this learning theory, in which individuals build cross-cultural understanding and the purpose of learning is to adapt to patterns and represent the current state. Learning is transferred when the individual connects or adds to their experiences. An individual learns rapidly and learning is best explained as complex.  In other words, through diverse knowledgeable sources. The benefits of this type of learning is that it allows individuals to reflect on their prior knowledge, experience, and perceptions. Where learners achieve a sense of reality, comprehension, and flexibility. However, the problems with this type of learning theory is that not all individuals have access to technology.

Please Reflect:
How has technology helped you grow as an individual?

  1. Even if the individual has access to technology it doesn't mean the individual knows what to do with it. I have technology all around me but I have not learned how to use it all. I need to embrace it with enthusiasm and then I can learn what I need to learn about technology so I can catch up with my 4 year old students. I grew up with technology not sure why I avoid some of it. I think that I am afraid of security issues with the various social media platforms.

  2. You are right, there could be many security issues in using social media. However, there are settings and security setting that we can change in many social media if there are concerns about such issues. Also, by not using the child's face or name is a way of respecting confidentiality of the child.
